Project Description
The Illinois Tollway has deployed and operates a Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS). The system consists of CCTV cameras, vehicle detectors, permanent and portable dynamic message signs, weigh-in-motion stations, and road weather information stations (RWIS). SDI was contracted to provide Engineering services required to provide the Tollway with necessary management, oversight, and technical support related to the maintenance of the ITS equipment, TIMS communications and networking, and fiber optics operations and maintenance.
Goals
The Tollway is planning to continue expanding and enhancing the system in the coming years. Currently, remote field devices communicate with the central system via a mix of multimode and single mode fiber optic cable, analog video multiplexers and switches, and SONET equipment. The Tollway has recently deployed a Next Generation Network (NGN) that will communicate via Ethernet/IP protocols. The TIMS network will begin migrating existing devices to the NGN and new deployments will be designed to utilize the NGN. In general, the TIMS network will interface with the NGN at mainline toll plazas and communications tower locations.
Solution/Services
- Provide six on-site support staff providing Project/Program Management services
- Day-to-day management of the ITS maintenance contract
- Communications and networking support that consists of planning, design, and integration support for the TIMS side of the communications system.
- Fiber optics management that consists of day-to-day oversight of all aspects of fiber optics design, construction, maintenance, and third-party support, including financial management.
- Design and development of an ITS and fiber optic cable asset management system.
- Video and Network Architecture Design and Product vendor assessment and recommendations
- Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) of the current Electronic Tollway Collection System
Result
Everyday, the SDI staff delivers reliable technology systems and infrastructure support services, allowing ISTHA to reach their goals of congestion relief, enhanced travel safety, and improved corridor transportation system operations.
