History

Innovative Technology Built on a Legacy of Engineering Success

For more than 25 years, SDI has delivered mission critical systems and technology services to some of our nation’s most complex and public-facing organizations and government entities. Known as a forward-thinking systems integrator, our ability to provide custom solutions using a responsive, local delivery model starts with our history of engineering success:

In 1989, Environmental Systems Design, Inc. (ESD), a premier engineering firm, developed an in-house support staff to design and manage information technology solutions for its engineering disciplines. In subsequent years, the information services division was sought after to provide stand-alone technology services to local governments, utility clients and businesses in the real estate, health care, and finance industries. On November 22, 1996, the information services division emerged from the parent company as SDI (System Development.Integration, LLC) with a mission focused exclusively on providing superior information technology solutions and advisory services.

Since its incorporation, SDI has been entrusted with delivering advanced security and IT systems throughout the United States. SDI’s portfolio of clients includes airports, seaports, mass transits, utilities, and government agencies. The firm has built an expertise in addressing the higher technical and security requirements of these critical, high-value environments.

As a systems integrator focusing on such complex, large-scale operations, SDI identified a heightened need for security technology professional services. To best serve this demand, SDI strategically acquired several security integrators that had outstanding past performance, security industry expertise, and commitment to client success similar to SDI. In June 2013, SDI acquired Charleston-based i-sys Corporation, adding building automation and fire system experience to SDI’s solutions. Soon after, SDI made its second acquisition in August 2013 when it purchased X7, a Washington, D.C.-based security integration company.

Today, all three companies operate under the singular SDI brand, offering an unmatched hybrid of security and IT expertise.

SDI is privately held, and backed by private equity firms, LLR Partners and Monument Capital Group.
